A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook parts of the Mariana islands yesterday at 11: 09am but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to the Emergency Management Office, the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale and had a depth of about 21.7 miles, located about 140 miles southwest of Anatahan, 115 miles west of Saipan, 120 miles northwest of Tinian and 105 miles northwest of Rota.

EMO said yesterday that, based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas.

The EMO said that one local resident called the office to verify the quake.

“A Saipan resident called at about 11:12am and asked if we had an earthquake. I checked the scale and it showed that we had,” Geophysical Seismic Technician Section supervisor Juan Camacho told Saipan Tribune.

“This happened for a few seconds. I also did not even feel the earthquake. Only one resident called and asked regarding this matter,” he added.
