Some 1,440 pounds of debris was removed at the Cleanup Brigade held at Old Man by the Sea.

The monthly cleanup, spearheaded by the Division of Environmental Quality, attracted over 25 participants.

Brigade participants are recognized for their commitment. Volunteers who participate in at least ten (10) monthly cleanups in a given year receive a brigade cap and those who participate in at least three (3) cleanups receive a green brigade t-shirt.

DEQ recently awarded Atdao I. Rosario, a student at ChaCha Oceanview Junior High School, for his outstanding participation in the monthly brigade throughout the 2007.

“I am shocked to receive this award, said Rosario. “I joined the cleanups because I want to help clean our environment and to care for our beaches. I was not expecting to receive anything,” he added.

DEQ rirector Frank M. Rabauliman presented the certificate of appreciation during the schools’ commencement exercise. “I’m pleased to present Atdao Rosario a small token of thanks and hope that students will follow in his footsteps,” said Rabauliman.

Individuals, schools, and community organizations can also help care for our natural resources by joining the monthly brigade or by participating in the adopt a beach program.

The DEQ cleanup brigade began in 1996 and is held on the first Saturday of each month at various beaches on Saipan.

Adopting a beach requires a four-cleanup per year commitment and DEQ provides trash bags and gloves for each cleanup. Those interested in adopting a beach need to complete a registration form, available online at www.deq.gov.mp. (DEQ)
