That is the question that has been bugging some Tinian residents, who want to know if the position will be publicly announced or would a political appointment be made.

Board of Education chairwoman Lucy Blanco-Maratita assured, though, that should the post become vacant, an announcement would be made and the decision of who to hire will rest with the education commissioner and not the board.

A Tinian resident said that island residents have not been officially told if Tinian High School principal Florine Hofschneider still and will remain the school’s principal in the upcoming school year. The residents have reportedly been told, unofficially as well, that Eric San Nicolas, nephew of Tinan Mayor Joseph San Nicolas, is now serving as the acting principal.

“He is a very bright young man, but not qualified. There are many qualified people who would like to be principal of Tinian High School and the parents and students want a fully qualified principal this time,” the resident said.

Saipan Tribune called the Tinian High School to get Hofschneiders’ comments. Her reply: “I have no plans right now to share with anybody,” she said briefly before ending the call.

Blanco-Maratita said that she is “not aware that the current THS principal is stepping down. …The board also wants someone who is qualified; thus the reason for requiring certain qualifications of principals.”
