A man was killed while his passenger was reported in critical condition when their car ran off the road and fell into a drainage along Tun Joaquin Doi Road in Finasisu yesterday afternoon.

Department of Public Safety commissioner Claudio K. Norita confirmed with Saipan Tribune that the driver died.

Norita said the male passenger was still in critical condition at the hospital.

DPS Traffic Commander Sgt. Jerry Ayuyu identified the fatality as Paul Torwan, 34.

Ayuyu said Torwan was pronounced dead at the Commonwealth Health Center due to multiple trauma and other injuries.

Ayuyu said the male passenger was seriously injured and was still at CHC.

The traffic commander said alcohol was involved in the accident, but that investigation is still ongoing.

He said preliminary investigation showed that the two victims were in a white Subaru Legacy sedan that was traveling along Tun Joaquin Doi Road in the direction of Chalan Kanoa.

As the car was going down the hill and approaching the Ladera International School area, it swerved to the shoulder of the road and fell into the drainage, which is about three feet deep.

The car’s front portion smashed into the drainage’s bridge’s gutter. The strong impact severely damaged the vehicle.

Medics arrived and it took them a few minutes to extricate the victims from the car. The victims were transported to CHC.

DPS is expected to release more details about the accident today.

The road was dry at the time.
