The executive director of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and members of the Public Utilities Commission have been called to testify on four utility-related bills now before the Senate.

The Senate Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation, and Communications will hold a public hearing on Monday to receive testimonies on the CUC bills and related issues. The public hearing will be held on Monday, June 30, 2008, starting at 10am, in the Senate chamber in the Legislature.

The witnesses include CUC executive director Antonio Muna, Attorney General Matthew Gregory, and PUC members Viola Alepuyo, Kyle Calabrese, and Kimberlyn King-Hinds.

They are expected to comment on three separate House-approved bills calling for the privatization of the Commonwealth’s power system, granting discounts on customers’ power bills, and setting stricter meter reading procedures for CUC.

A Senate bill requiring CUC to lower water rates for commercial farmers and ranchers will also be discussed.

The other items on the agenda are the status of the Saipan power plant repair project, the recently signed contract for rental generators, and the power situation on Tinian and Rota.
