Parole, probation officers honored
The Commonwealth’s probation and parole officers get to have their own week beginning tomorrow, with the signing of a proclamation declaring July 14-18 as CNMI Probation and Parole Officers Week.
Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez proclaimed July 14-18, 20098 as CNMI Probation and Parole Officers Week during a signing ceremony held Friday morning at the Governor’s Office, just before the start of the State of the Judiciary Address at the Legislature.
Villagomez urged the community to “recognize and congratulate the officers serving in Commonwealth probation and parole institutes for their vital contribution to the general welfare of our people.”
Probation and parole officers are charged with the duties and responsibilities of supervising adult and juvenile offenders in the CNMI.
The proclamation pays tribute to the local probation and parole officers, describing them as dedicated law enforcement officers essential to the criminal justice system. The document said probation and parole officers “uphold the law with dignity, while recognizing the right of the public to be safe from criminal activity.”
The proclamation also noted that by supervising adult and juvenile offenders in the CNMI, probation and parole officers “protect all residents and offenders, while assisting offenders in building positive lifestyles to become effective and productive members of society.”
Probation and parole officers are trained professionals who provide periodic services and referrals for offenders. They supervise and monitor felony, misdemeanor and traffic cases. They work in partnership with community agencies and groups to promote prevention, intervention and advocacy programs.
“Probation and parole officers strive to achieve maximum and acceptable standards of professionalism in their work by enrolling in continuing education and training programs. They supervise and monitor felony, misdemeanor and traffic cases, while also advocating community and restorative justice,” the proclamation reads.
