The Workforce Investment Agency on Monday announced a second installment of a major program aimed at helping young people in the Commonwealth to develop marketable job skills will launch later this month.

The Summer Youth Employment Training Program—a series of workshops teaching students workplace skills like telephone etiquette, customer service and work ethics before placing them in jobs—is slated to recommence July 28 for a six -week period ending Sept. 5.

WIA executive director Edith DeLeon Guerrero in an interview Monday said the program will help the students involved gain the necessary skills to succeed in the workplace.

“You have to be competitive to capture the kind of work that you want out there,” Guerrero said. “Preparing students at an early age is the best way to get them the experience they need.”

The previous phase of the program, which ran from June 16 to July 25, included about 400 students from schools in the Commonwealth. The new session will train 266 participants. The workshops will be held July 23 to 24 at American Memorial Park Visitors Center from 8 a.m. to noon and 1p.m. to 5 p.m. July 23 to 24, the program will also have OSHA workshops and chances for students to meet one another.

Meanwhile, WIA in a statement Monday encouraged those who have not yet received W-2 forms through its Work Experience Program or summer program to get one at the agency’s office in the Capitol Hill building, room 1215.
