Devil’s Advocates upset Gil Fever
The 2008 Northern Mariana Islands Football Association Co-ed Soccer Summer League concluded its regular season last week but not before erstwhile undefeated Gil Fever fell to Devil’s Advocates.
Gil Fever’s 3-4 loss to Devil’s Advocates last Thursday at the CPA Airport Field marred what previously was an unblemished record.
Jetsada Phonsutjit found the back of the net three times for Devil’s Advoates, ending his drought of scoreless games that stretched back to his first game of the season when he scored a couple.
Gil Fever managed to score three goals to tie the match, but Patty Coleman put Devil’s Advocates ahead with a goal. It was Coleman’s second score of the season to tie her with Lindsay Sosovec in the race for the women’s Golden Boot award.
The loss dropped Gil Fever to a win-loss-draw record of 4-1-1, while the win improved Devil’s Advocates’ mark to 3-3-1.
In other Week 6 results, Deaniacs defeated Sureshanks, 2-1, while GMF and Captain Morgan’s finished their game in a 2-2 tie.
Masa Otsuka scored twice for the Deaniacs, while Brenda Shultz scored for Sureshanks. Joe “Miller Time” Miller, meanwhile, scored twice for GMF, while Tiger Lee and Bishow scored for Captain Morgan’s in the scoreless draw.
Deaniacs upped its record to 2-4-2 with the victory against Sureshanks, which ended the regular season at the cellar with a 1-4-1 mark.
Captain Morgan’s finished runner-up to Gil Fever in the team standings with a 3-1-2 win-loss-draw record, while GMF came away with a 2-2-2 mark at the end of the regular season.
NMIFA Co-ed Soccer Summer League Week 5 results, meanwhile, saw Deaniacs beat Devil’s Advocates, 3-1, last July 17.
July 16’s game pitting Gil Fever against Captain Morgan’s, meanwhile, resulted in a 3-3 tie.
GMF, for its part, defeated Sureshanks, 2-1, in the July 15 game that saw Miller, the starting forward for the CNMI Men’s National Team, make quite a splash in his co-ed league debut.
While things were looking up for the opposing Sureshanks during the first half, Miller scored two goals in the second half to lead GMF to victory.
The play of the game in the GMF-Sureshanks game came when Sami Birmingham-Babauta scored a goal after GMF keeper and captain Greg Borja bobbled an easy ball.
Sami BB, as she is affectionately known by her fans, is the youngest player to ever score in an NMIFA league game.
Jetsada Phonsutjit, meanwhile, currently leads the race for the Golden Boot award for men with five, followed by Miller and Chris Nelson with four apiece.
Tiger Lee, Masa Otsuka, and Jason Schroeder have three goals each, while Rob Jordan and Jeff Cloud have two each.
Zach Posner, Tyce Mister, Steve McKagan, Solemon Gazi, Peter Houk, Peter Bosner, Nong Theotherthaiguy, Michael Deery, Jimmy Pua, Jersh Angeles, Daniel Macario, Dan Westfall, Bishow, Angelo Villagomez, and Allen Mijares all found the back of the net once.
While Coleman and Sosovec have scored two goals apiece to lead the women’s division, Birmingham-Babauta, Ratree Thethaigirl, Madison Smith, and Brenda Schultz have a goal to their names each.
The Coed Summer League is a non-competitive league. While results and goals are tallied, the number one rule of this league is to have fun.
NMIFA Co-ed Soccer Summer League coordinator Angelo Villagomez said the league lasts for eight weeks, with games played on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. Each team will play one game per week.
Games will start at 5:15pm on game days and will consist of two 35-minute halves with five-minute halftimes.
