Nine high school students recently got a taste of university life in Guam as part of the Summer Bridge Program offered by the Northern Marianas College’s Educational Talent Search Program. The Summer Bridge Program prepares students for college success by exposing them to life away from home and the realities of transferring to an off-island four-year university.

During their six-day trip from July 19 to 24, the students visited the University of Guam, where they were given tours of and presentations on the departments of the institution. At UOG, the students participated in a scavenger hunt in which they matched each department with its responsibilities.

“All of the students were able to walk away from the program with a better understanding of what’s in store when they transfer to a four-year university,” said Joan Dubrall, ETS advisement coordinator. “They are now focused on what preparations they must make before their transition to college.”

ETS director Jeanette Villagomez and ETS administrative manager Georgia Salas also accompanied the students.

The college’s Educational Talent Search is a program that identifies and assists individuals ages 11 and above who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to the postsecondary school of their choice.

Students who want to enroll in the ETS program can visit the ETS office in Building I on the NMC Campus in As Terlaje or call 234-5498 ext. 1312 for more information. (NMC)
