Rota gets $100,000 funding
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial yesterday signed into law a bill appropriating over $100,000 for various projects and programs on Rota.
The appropriated funds come from Rota’s local license fees for pachinko slot machines and poker machines.
The funds are appropriated as follows: $10,000 to the Rota Little League for sports equipment; $10,000 to the Rota Little League to host the 2008 Little League Tournament in Rota; $10,000 for youth and vocational programs; $25,000 for the Rota medical guest house and other projects; $5,000 for assessment and architectural design for improvements at Rota’s Bird Sanctuary; $22,000 for the operations of the Rota Legislative Delegation; and $20,000 for the operations of the Rota Gaming Commission.
Fitial, in a message to House Speaker Arnold I. Palacios and Rota Legislative Delegation Chairman Victor B. Hocog, said the Department of Finance has confirmed the availability of funds for the appropriation. He said he signed the bill “to accommodate the needs of the people of the First Senatorial District.”
Each senatorial district charges local poker fees, amounting to $6,000 per machine on Saipan and $4,000 on Rota and Tinian. In addition to the local license fees, the CNMI government imposes a $6,000 fee for each poker machine operated in the Commonwealth.
