In September 2007, the young women of the Saipan branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were looking for a humanitarian project. It is tradition of the LDS people to serve within the community, and this begins with the youth.

The near completion of the Dr. Jose T. Villagomez Center for Public Health and Dialysis was an inspiration. As an important component of keeping the area germ-free, the hemodialysis centers are often kept very cold. The low temperature, however, can be difficult for the patients.

In an effort to thank the nurses and doctors of the dialysis center for their hard work and devotion, and to add to the comfort of the dialysis patients, the project of making and donating lap quilts to the center was decided on. These quilts are being donated to the center for patients’ use; however they will remain at the center, available for everyone.

In conjunction with an LDS Relief Society (the women’s organization) in Salt Lake City, Utah, specifically the Mill Creek Ward, 25 lap quilts were tied and bound. The material for the quilts was purchased here on island. All of the quilts reflect an island theme; each made from a different aloha fabric. The material was then sent to Salt Lake City where the women and young women of the Mill Creek Ward hand tied the quilts. Once tied, the unfinished quilts were sent back to Saipan where the young women here sewed on donation labels and bound the edges.

The finished product is a tremendous collaboration of two groups of women separated by the Pacific Ocean.

The connection to the Mill Creek Ward is Jac Wilde Pate, a former female missionary who served on Saipan from 1996 to 1997. Saipan holds a special place in her heart, so when she was approached about the possibility of working together to benefit the people of Saipan, she was thrilled.

The LDS Young Women hope the people of the Commonwealth who have to frequent the hemodialysis center will enjoy the quilts. (PR)
