King and Queen of the Diamond draws six teams
Six teams are entered in this weekend’s second leg of the 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamond Co-ed Slow-pitch Softball Tournament.
Tournament coordinator Joey Dela Cruz said the six teams are led by first leg champion Shell Marianas and runner-up SaiPal as well as Total Chaos, Sufa, On Da Rox, and Natibu.
The second leg of the King and Queen of the Diamond will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Capital Hill Field.
The first game will start at 10am today with Total Chaos taking on Sufa. It will be followed by the 11am match between SaiPal and On Da Rox.
Shell Marianas will then kickoff the afternoon games at 1pm when it squares off against the winner of the Total Chaos-Sufa match in the first game. Natibu likewise will battle the winner of the second game between SaiPal and On Da Rox at 2pm.
While the double-elimination phase of the two-day tournament will continue on Sunday, Dela Cruz said the 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamond’s homerun derby will kick off at 1pm on the same day.
Entry fee for the homerun derby is $10 with the winner taking home 10 percent of the total pot plus a live pig. The championship game, according to Dela Cruz, is expected to get underway starting at 3pm.
The first leg of the King and Queen of the Diamond was held last May 17 and 18 with Shell Marianas, the former No Ka Oi, winning the championship after beating SaiPal in the title game.
Other teams that took part in the first leg of the tournament were second runner-up Team Chaos, Peligru, Jamack How, PPP Jets, Coral Reef Red Snappers, Team Sufa, and Shell Made to Move.
The winners of the first, second, and third legs of the Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamond will play each other in the championship round to determine the overall champion, which will represent Saipan in a tournament in Palau later in the year.
MARPAC, the exclusive distributor of Budweiser on Saipan, will pay for the tickets of all 15 players of the winning team bound for Palau.
