The Saipan and Northern Islands mayors’ offices and the Office of Aging are hosting a native medicine summit today in hopes of passing down the methods to younger generations.

“The mayors were asked to be the main sponsors because of their role in the local community level,” Tony Benavente, spokesman for the Saipan Mayor’s Office, said. “They wanted the mayor to strongly encourage the local people, the natives, to start learning more about traditional healing and traditional medicine with the hope of passing it on down with younger generation.”

Native Healers will perform presentations, demonstrations and panel discussions.

The summit is funded in part by a grant from the Administration for Native Americans and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The event will take place from 8:30am to 4:30pm at the Manamko Center/Office of Aging.
