Rota High trying to offer Spanish class
Rota High School Acting Principal Sharlene Manglona wants to offer Spanish as a foreign language to her students, but she is having difficulty finding a qualified teacher.
Manglona said she has a candidate who has taken several courses in the language but has a degree in the medical field. Manglona is currently working with the Public School System’s Human Resources department to determine if the teacher qualifies.
“[Spanish] would really help our students,” she said.
Manglona said she wants Rota High School to focus more on teaching Spanish, as opposed to Japanese, the foreign language they have taught in the past.
To be successful in the CNMI or the mainland, it is important to know Spanish, she said.
“I want to move away from Japanese,” she said. “Most students go to the mainland and our focus should be to get students familiar with [Spanish].”
If the candidate Manglona is hoping will teach Spanish does not qualify, she will teach in the science field and the school will continue to teach Japanese, Manglona said.
Manglona is still looking to hire two more teachers for this coming school year. She wants to have 13 or 14 teachers for the 165 students expected.
