A road crew began a multi-million dollar project to pave a major section of road on Tinian this week, a long awaited plan funded with federal highway money.

In an interview Friday, William Cing, adviser to Tinian Mayor Jose San Nicolas, reported the road work—the paving and widening sections of Routes 201 and 202 on the island—has already begun. The project will pave the roadways from their intersection with Broadway, one of the main roads on the island, through center of San Jose to the local docks and widen them to two lanes.

Cing added the project would include the installation of sidewalks and drainage. The plan is funded through federal highway money, he said. Exact figures on its price tag, however, were not immediately available. The project must be completed within 270 working days under the terms of the funding.

“It’s a welcome thing,” said Tinian businesswoman Kimberly Hinds. “This is a project that’s been a long time in coming. The road is one of the main arteries through town.”

Workers began surveying for the project over the weekend, Hinds said.
