The G-Rollers I foiled the Kontenders’ bid for three straight wins, notching a 63-54 triumph in their game in the 2008 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The victory was the G-Rollers I’s second in as many games putting them in a tie for first place with the Southern Sonics. The Kontenders had their two-game winning run halted, as they dropped to second place with a 2-1 slate.

The G-Rollers I leaned on their decent three-point shooting to thwart the hard-fighting Kontenders.

The 2006 champions made six triples, including two in the closing minutes of the second half to nail a nine-point win. The Kontenders drilled only two triples, all in the first half.

Brandon Aurelio, who canned five triples in the G-Rollers I’s rout of the G-Rollers II, 87-42, was on fire in the first half, connecting on three triples.

But despite the G-Rollers I’s hot shooting, the Kontenders managed to keep pace with their foes in the first half. Trevor Ogumoro kept the Kontenders afloat, scoring 11 in the first half, which ended with the G-Rollers leading by only three, 28-25.

Don Teregeyo went scoreless for the G-Rollers I in the first half, but redeemed himself in the second, contributing 11, as he and Manny Matagolai hit timely baskets to foil the Kontenders’ repeated comeback bids.

Matagolai, who teamed up with Aurelio in putting the G-Rollers I on top in the first half, added nine in the second to keep the G-Rollers record clean.

Matagolai finished with 16 points, while Aurelio chipped in 12.

Trevor Ogumoro topscored for the Kontenders with 16 markers, but he had only five points in the second half. With Ogumoro off in the final 20 minutes of the match, Jester Kaipat was forced to carry the cudgels for the Kontenders, making nine of his 14 points in the second half.

G-Rollers I 63—Matagolai 16, Aurelio 12, Teregeyo 11, Concepcion 9, Babauta , Namelo 2, Paez 2, Ogarto 1, Danas 1.

Kontenders 54—Ogumoro 16, Kaipat 14, Pua 9, Laniyo 5, Nogis 4, Dawe 2, E. Dillay 2, Tagabuel 1.

Scoring by halves: 28-25, 63-54.

Referees: Connie Camacho and Gilbert Espinosa.
