Sluggers will have their day under the sun this coming weekend.

Organizers have put up the homerun derby as a side event for the 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamonds Softball Tournament to be held at the Capitol Hill Ball Field on Sept. 13 and 14.

With the $10 entry fee, the Top 3 finishers will win the following reasonable prizes: one case of beer and a beach chair for first place; beach chair for second place; and a shirt and a hat for third place.

In related news, a meeting for teams taking part in the King and Queen of the Diamonds will be held this Thursday, Sept. 11, starting 7pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room. Teams are expected to pay the entry fee of $150 during the meeting.

It will be the third qualifying tournament for the annual event with the winner of the two-day event earning a ticket to the championship round next month.

Two other teams, Shell Marianas and Natibu, have already qualified for the championship round.

The first place team after the championship round will gain the right to represent the CNMI in Palau, which hosted the first edition in 2005 of the Budweiser of the Diamonds Tournament of champions, which was won by the CNMI’s No Ka Oi.

CNMI hosted the 2006 event and Guam in 2007.
