October proclaimed as Disability Employment Awareness Month
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed yesterday at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe a proclamation declaring October as Disability Employment Awareness Month, in line with the national observation of the event.
Each year the Commonwealth celebrates the month of October to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of persons with disabilities.
“We do this to highlight the strong contributions that people with disabilities make toward the advancement of our local economy. We also take this opportunity to help ensure that people with disabilities are accorded equal employment opportunities under the law. This month, some employers will also be recognized for their unwavering passion in opening their doors to provide job opportunities to individuals with disabilities entering the workforce,” according to the proclamation document.
The theme for the 2008 National Disability Employment Awareness Month is “America’s People…America’s Talent…America’s Strength!”
“I pledge to the CNMI community that this administration will continue to keep open doors of opportunities for people with disabilities by collaborative and united efforts with the State Rehabilitative Council and by supporting the activities of the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation in their (1) service delivery, (2) advocacy, and (3) continued partnership with the Workforce Investment Board and other stakeholders. We also seek to facilitate the smooth transition of students with disabilities to have positive employment outcomes through immersion in needed training,” said Fitial in his proclamation.
He called upon the community to observe this month and recognize the contributions, gifts and talents of people with disabilities, as well as the generosity and accommodating minds and hearts of employers who continue to welcome people with disabilities into their workplaces. (PR)
