Brotherhood bags pennant in Belau Slow-pitch League
Team Brotherhood won their first ever pennant by beating Man Amigos, 9-1, in the final playing date of the men’s division of the 2008 Belau Amateur Softball Association Slow-pitch League last Sunday at the Dandan Ballfield.
J.J. Laniyo, Jerry Ayuyu, Benji Tagabuel, and Myron Sablan scored two runs each, while Ken Kalen reached home plate once to lead the offense in the win that gave Brotherhood the No. 1 spot in the playoff round.
James Fleming scored Man Amigos’ lone run in the top of the sixth inning.
Brotherhood will meet PIC at the start of the best-of-three playoffs this Sunday, Oct. 12.
Ayuyu pitched for Brotherhood and allowed 10 hits but kept his ground by limiting Man Amigos to a mere run.
On offense, Ayuyu scored the game’s lone homerun in the bottom of first inning. He also tripled in the fifth and reached home plate on a single by second baseman Julian Camacho.
Ayuyu said this is the best finish for the team in the Belau League.
As a team, Brotherhood did not join the past three years. They won their last championship two years ago in the Crime Stoppers tournament.
Asked about their chances in the playoffs, Ayuyu said there are a lot of good teams this year.
Every team’s performance in a game is different, he said, adding that there are times a player is off in a particular game.
“The guys attitude in a game is crucial,” he said.
Team manager Bill Limes, for his part, said he has confidence in his players.
“We have a good chance [to win the title],” he said.
Brotherhood closed out its regular season with 10-1 record, while PTI was second with 9-2 win-loss slate.
It was the second loss of Man Amigos for the day.
In the other game make-up games in the men’s division last Sunday, SaiPal defeated Amigos, 8-3, while Ready Mix shattered Choll Aces, 13-2.
Meanwhile, the Hitters posted a one-sided 9-3 victory over Ohn Sakau at start of playoffs in the women’s side.
The Hitters established a 9-0 lead at the end of full five innings on the way to an easy win.
Pamela Reungel and Tracy Uchau scored two runs each, while Vanessa Mobel, Ank Ngirbeduul, Alana Aguon, Didil Temarcel, and ace pitcher Felisa Brel chipped in one each for the Hitters.
Erlinda Naputi, Doriana Emul, and Julie Palacios scored one each in the top of the sixth in Ohn Sakau’s losing effort.
It was also a lopsided score in the other playoff match with Sakudi prevailing over Atu Asi.
