Oceania Athletics offering free Level 1 coaching course
The Oceania Athletics Coaches Association will offer a free Australian Track and Field Coaches Associations Level 1 course by correspondence and online next year.
The course is open to women coaches from 21 members of the Oceania Athletics Association, but only five slots are available.
Each federation must nominate coaches, who should be active in the association and is not older than 40 years old.
The CNMI is an OAA member and is interested in the course.
Northern Marianas Athletics official Elias Rangamar said he will talk with other NMA officers to discuss the course.
“Maybe we can make an announcement for those interested to take the course. I am sure we have teachers/coaches who would want to take advantage of this free course.” Rangamar said.
Rangamar said in the past coaches needed to go off-island to get certified, but now it will be very convenient for them to take the coaching course online.
The course will have eight lessons and will cover 23 units. At the end of each lesson, participants will be given assignments and once they completed them, they will move to the next lesson.
Terry West, president of the Oceania Athletics Coaches Association and a Level 5 coach will facilitate the course and will communicate with participants regularly to make sure every lesson is well understood.
“This is a great opportunity for coaches to complete an accredited course without going ‘off-island’ and at their own pace. If successful we would hope to offer this each year to a different set of coaches both male and female,” said West in a statement posted at OAA’s website.
Once the eight lessons are completed, West will assign a formal assessment task to each participant.
Participants will be asked to perform certain tasks on their own island or at a competition.
Although selected coaches are expected to complete the course in one year, the time table for the completion is still flexible.
Each participant will be given the following resource materials: Coaches Resource Folder, Coaching Manual, ATFCA Orientation to Coaching Handbook, and the IAAF Handbook.
