Preparations for Education Month underway
Education Commissioner Rita Sablan said a committee has been tasked to prepare for the annual celebration of Education Month in November.
The committee, headed by David Bucher, met for the second time yesterday afternoon to discuss several activities and the formulation of the proclamation that would be signed later.
The actual Education Day celebration will be on Nov. 26 but the committee wants to hold a month-long series of activities, according to Saipan Southern High School principal Peter James Le’au.
Le’au, who was chairman of last year’s celebrations, said that with the new leadership of the Public School System in place, “we want a new image of PSS.”
Compared to previous years when they only had a daylong event and gave special recognition to outstanding teachers, this time there would be daily activities for everyone in the community to take part in, Le’au said.
He said they want to project a more positive image that would have an impact on the community.
“We want the 20 schools, along with the five departments of PSS, to be actively involved,” Le’au said.
Yesterday’s agenda included brainstorming on the theme for this year, mechanics of the essay writing competition, and the annual awards. They also discussed the logo for the event.
As the past, there would be the Teacher of the Year, Support Staff of the Year and Teacher Aide of the Year awards.
Le’au said they need the support of private companies. “We will be soliciting help from sponsors,” he said.
He said they are planning to have the winning essays published in newspapers.
Le’au explained that all those who became chairmen of the committee that prepares the annual event are former teacher of the year awardees.
In his case, one of his teachers at Southern High, Andrew Golden, was the 2006-2007 islandwide award winner.
Bucher, a science teacher at Kagman High, was the Teacher of the Year in school year 2007-2008.
