3 teams debut with wins in futsal league

Three teams started their campaign in the 2008 NMIFA Women’s Futsal Fall League on winning notes downing separate rivals Saturday at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium.

Team 1 began the hostilities in the inaugural women’s futsal league and edged Team 2, 4-3.

Team 1 is captained by Jamie Beavis. Other members of the team are Fedora Camacho, Mel Borja, Maria Ornes, Connie Camacho, Nola Hix, Veronica Saures, Catherine Anderson, Lindsay Davis, and Chirapan McGuire.

Krista Hawley is the team captain of Team 2, which is composed of Reyna Saures, Amanda Armstrong, Nikki Gabaldon, Meaghan Hassel-Shearer, Toi Punperm, Noi Horey, Chantelle Voutilainen, Jocelyn Saures, and Carrie Knight.

Team 1 and 2 played in two 30-minute halves using the whole NMC gym basketball court, which has one goal each at the baseline.

Team 4 posted similar 4-3 victory against Team 3.

The winning squad is composed of captain Laura Williams, Brenda and Madison Schultz, Toi Smith, Becca Newman, Francine Sablan, Tomoko Kawakata, Rebekah Yost, Lisa Laniyo, and Anna Manibusan.

The losing Team 3 has Elizabeth Henke as team captain. Joining her on Team 3 are Vanessa Pritchard, Tawny Barcinas, Becky Covarrubias, Gayle Martin, Marya Oestreich, Amber Roberts, Patty Coleman, Katie Busenkell, and Ciara Ada.

Team 5 and 6 played in the last game with the former escaping with a 2-1 triumph.

Team 5’s roster include captain Janel Villegas, Jojie Vallo, Bayarmaa O’Connor, Omdi Marino, Lakell Villegas, Linda Anastacio, Divya Sharma, Zoe Jewell, Asia Michaleum, and Katie Peters.

Team 6 is composed of captain Natalie Hill, Melody Matson, Jen Backhaus, Jenny Linden, Sami Birmingham-Babauta, Joelyn Saures, Kathy Pagapular, Angie Mister, Carol Auther, and Briana Martin.

Games in this year’s futsal league are played every Saturday.

This weekend Team 6 will duel Team 3 at 8:30am, Team 4 will collide with Team 1 at 9:30am, and Team 5 will face Team 2 in the last match at 10:30am.

Meanwhile, league organizer said they are still looking for sponsors for three teams. Donation from sponsors will be used for the teams’ uniforms.

So far, the league has only three sponsors in Wild Bills, Law Offices of Matt Smith, and Marine Tech International.
