The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands has told interested teams to start preparing for the start of its Budweiser Cup and 25-and-under Basketball League.

BANMI board member and Bud Cup and 25-and-under Basketball League coordinator Abner Venus said competition for both leagues are expected to start soon.

He said BANMI waited for the island’s power situation to normalize before giving the two leagues the green light to kick off its 2008 seasons.

The Bud Cup is the CNMI’s premier basketball league, while the 25-and-under is more of a developmental competition geared for the island’s youth cagers.

Venus said BANMI is expected to finalize the format for both the Bud Cup and the 25-and-under Basketball League during its scheduled monthly meeting next month. Details to be hammered out are the ground rules, entry fee, and schedule for the two leagues.

For more inquiries about the Bud Cup and 25-and-under Basketball League, contact Venus at 483-4906 or fellow coordinator Elias Rangamar at 664-2502.

Rock Steady won the 2007 BANMI-Budweiser Cup Men’s Islandwide Basketball League after beating the Saipan Stevedore Suns, 92-78, in the winner-take-all championship earlier this year.

Rock Steady used a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter as cushion to secure the title and their sixth straight win at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium last Feb. 1.

Ulloa’s, meanwhile, won the 2007 SaipanCell 25-and-under Youth Basketball League crown, beating the Southern Sonics, 2-1, in their best-of-three championship series.

The team clinched the crown after a 90-81 victory in Game 3. Ulloa’s took Game 1, 101-86, but Southern Sonics roared back with a 100-94 victory in Game 2.
