Memorial Classic takes the place of Turkey Shoot
In lieu of its yearly Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament, the Refaluwasch Golf Association will be holding its Inaugural Memorial Classic instead on Nov. 8 at the Marianas Country Club.
Club tournament director Jess Wabol said the decision to replace the Turkey Shoot with the Memorial Classic was made to honor RGA’s departed members Plas Tagabuel, Sid K. Peter, and Tony Taitano.
Aside from that, Wabol added that unlike the annual Turkey Shoot—which is strictly for RGA members—the Memorial Classic will be open to all golfers in the CNMI.
With this, the affable former Oleai Elementary School principal invited players from Saipan Golf Association, Fil-Taga Golf Association, Korean Golf Association, and other clubs on Saipan to take part in the tournament.
“Everyone’s invited. This is actually one of the few times in the year—excluding the major tournaments like HANMI and Tournament of Champions—that all of us can come out in the golf course and play,” he said.
Showtime for next month’s Memorial Classic is at 6:30am with tee time set an hour later at 7:30am. Entry fee for the one-day tournament is $100 and entitles participants to a wonderful round of golf, a chance to win cash prizes in the both low gross and double Peoria categories, a ticket to the awards banquet immediately following the competition, and an opportunity to donate to a worthy cause.
Like the Turkey Shoot of previous years, a portion of the proceeds will be given to a school, this time Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School.
Wabol said the low gross category will have two divisions—men’s and women’s—with first place taking home $300, second $200, and third $100.
Low net double Peoria, meanwhile, will have a bigger bounty as first place gets $500, second $300, and third $200.
There will also be a hole-in-one prize in hole No. 16 and a closest to the pin competition in holes No. 6, 8, and 12.
Wabol reminded interested parties that check should be made out under the name of the Refaluwasch Golf Association.
