Japanese wakeboarders here again for Chagi Cup
Japanese professional wakeboarders Hatakeyama Yoshiyuki and Fujimoto Makoto will make a return engagement to Saipan for this Sunday’s 6th Annual Chagi Cup.
The Gator Board Pro Riders of the Japan Wakeboard Association also took part in last year’s event with Hatakeyama’s team finishing second and Fujimoto’s settling for the consolation prize.
Dan Westphal and Kumiko Deleon Guerrero will be representing Saipan in the yearly wakeboarding tilt, which like 2007 will be held in the waters off the Susupe Beach Park.
The 6th Annual Chagi Cup starts with reception and an opening ceremony at 8am and immediately followed by the event’s team competition.
Deleon Guerrero, who also doubles as organizer of the event, said a total of five teams will duke it out in the one-day wakeboarding event.
Action resumes after lunch with the much-awaited demonstration of wakeboarding tricks by pros Hatakeyama and Fujimoto.
The demonstration will be followed by the individual competition, which will have four divisions—Beginners Class, Intermediate Class, Expert Class, and Pro Class.
The tournament will draw to a close with the awarding ceremony at around 4pm where winners of the team and individual competitions will be honored.
Last year, Deleon Guerrero’s Boku-Chan beat Hatakeyama’s Team Hatake in the finals. Other teams that took part in the 5th Chagi Cup were Sky-Mo, Fly-ers, and Team B.
In the individual competition, Boku-chan’s Otsuka Sadayuki won the MVP, Sky-Mo’s Kotani Hirumi performed the highest jump, while Fly-ers’ Westphal, Onuma Kenji, and Mieko Kobayashi figured in the hardest crash.
Boku-chan’s Tanaka Syuichi, meanwhile, wore the best costume and Team Hatake’s Adachi Takafumi went home with the JK prize.
