Champ-on enters win column

Champ-on ended its four-game losing skid in the 2008 Miller Lite Four-Person Beach Volleyball League after sweeping MHS Serves Up! Thursday night at the Pacific Islands Club sand court.

Champ-on needed an extra point to pull off a 22-20 victory in the first set and sealed its first win in the tournament with a 21-16 triumph in the second set. Champ-on completed a sweep with a similar 21-16 victory in the third set.

The win moved Champ-on two notches up in the team standings with its 1-4 record.

MHS Servers Up! dropped to second to the last in the 11-team field with its disappointing 0-5 record.

Two other teams recorded sweeps to remain in the upper half of the team standings.

Enyonphace defeated Karakuchi to improve to a 5-1 record and keep the No. 2 spot. Acme Roofing is leading the league with a perfect 5-0 slate.

Enyonphace won by five points in the first set, 21-16, and played extended minutes in the second before eking out a 25-23 win. Karakuchi, which played catch up most of the time, lost steam in the third set, allowing Enyophace a sweep via an easy 21-8 win.

Karakuchi absorbed its second straight defeat dropping the team to fifth place.

Karakuchi has a 3-2 record, tying two other teams, but it earned 283 points in five games to finish ahead of Thai One On (278) and the MHS Peers (276).

Kimoichi moved up from sixth to third place after notching its fourth victory in a row.

Kimoichi extended its winning run after outclassing the MHS Doh-Fins, 21-14, 21-6, 21-6.

Off Twice won the first game Thursday night after claiming two of their three-set match against the MHS Oakies.

Off Twice prevailed in the first set, 21-13, but failed to seal the win in the second set with the MHS Oakies recovering, 21-19. Off Twice regained its bearings and preserved the victory with a 21-16 triumph in the deciding third set.

Kimoichi and Off Twice have similar 4-2 records, but the former took the No. 3 spot in the team standings having scored 329 points in six games. Off Twice had 317 points.

Games in this year’s four-person beach volleyball league will continue on Tuesday with Champ-on hoping for back-to-back wins when it takes on the MHS Peers in the first game at 5:30pm.

The second match at 6:30pm will have Kimoichi challenging the MHS Oakies with the former aiming for its fifth straight victory.

MHS Serves Up! will try to enter the win column when it collides with Thai One On in the third game at 7:30pm.

Acme Roofing will go for win No. 6 in as many games when it faces Off Twice in the last match of the night at 8:30pm.
