A 20-year-old man allegedly beat up his minor girlfriend and elbowed her minor cousin near a basketball court in Koblerville last week.

Bernard R. Reyes was arrested for two counts of assault and battery, and one count of disturbing the peace.

A $3,500 cash was initially imposed for the defendant’s temporary liberty. On Friday, Superior Court associate judge Kenneth Govendo allowed Reyes to set a $2,500 unsecured bond and released him to his mother who is acting as third-party custodian.

Govendo set the arraignment for Oct. 27.

Detective Andrea Ozawa stated in her report that a caller informed the Department of Public Safety in the evening of Oct. 12 that there was a fight near the basketball court in Koblerville.

Police responded and medics were summoned to treat the injuries of the victims, a 17-year-old girl and her 12-year-old cousin.

Ozawa said Reyes fled before the police arrived at the scene. But Reyes was arrested later that same night when the victims’ family called police that he was seen in the area again.

Police investigation showed that the 17-year-old girl, her brother, and cousin had just exited an internet café in Koblerville when Reyes, who was waiting outside, met them.

Reyes confronted his girlfriend as to whom she was with and where did she go that day.

The girlfriend told Reyes to leave them alone, but he followed them and punched a signboard.

The girlfriend tried to call the police. Reyes then dropped his backpack and told her to pick it up or else he would beat her up.

When the girlfriend ignored him, the defendant allegedly punched her on the left ear. He also allegedly threw an open can of beer, hitting her on the left ear again.

The 12-year-old girl tried to stop Reyes from beating her cousin, but the defendant instead allegedly elbowed her on the right eye.

When people in the area started to come out from their houses after hearing the commotion, Reyes ran away.

The girlfriend then called the police. (Ferdie de la Torre)
