The Department of Public Works’ Energy Division is giving the Commonwealth Health Center an energy transformation.

Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department’s Energy Program, DPW has spent $269,000 on a project to improve CHC’s energy efficiency, said Thelma Inos of DPW’s Energy Division.

“[CHC] is one of the largest utility users, so we wanted to help the government,” she said.

DPW recently installed six solar panels to power the hospital ground’s lights, as well as retrofitted lights and replaced exit signs with LED lights to conserve electricity, Inos said.

“This is all apart of the package we’re slowly doing,” she added.

She estimates the project will reduce energy consumption by 20 to 30 percent.

Depending on funds, Inos said they hope to complete more energy renewable projects. There are plans to install wind turbines at the Saipan office and at Rota’s CHC.

Inos said she hopes to work with other government agencies to reduce consumption as well.
