Reality vs rhetoric

Congratulations to President-elect Barack Obama as he begins the transition period from rhetoric to reality. He would use executive orders to make an immediate impact on his promises to fix Wall Street and Main Street. It isn’t an easy task given the global financial mess he’s inherited. What matters is how does he get the $175 billion stimulus package to beleaguered homeowners.

Then there’s the greater task of wealth and jobs creation. At least he’s started by meeting with leaders of democracies around the world to stem a global financial meltdown that would send every street selling pencil. It’s a monumental task and I hope and pray that through thick and thin, he would be able to have a clear vision in his mission mandated his presidency by a majority of Americans across the country.

So what’s so historic about Obama’s presidency? Never in my wildest imaginings did I dream that a non-Anglo Saxon would be commander-in-chief of our country. It happened during my lifetime! I was dumbfounded, miffed, though not necessarily euphoric about Obama’s presidency. But then his election is a true manifestation of the political maturity of our country. Hope and pray he begins his presidency judiciously. He needs it and we all need it too!

Now, I’ve been quizzed on my vote in the recent so-called “historic” election for the NMI’s first non-voting delegate. My answer is a crisp nobody! Pressed further, I offered a simple explanation: There’s hardly any equal representation in a non-voting delegate. And I’ve made a commitment not to glorify a “feel good” exercise that makes a mockery of equal representation. Though this is the case, I still remain guardedly optimistic that someday we too shall overcome! A pleasant day for everyone!
