Four recycling tips for your home

Save energy, resources and cut down on garbage by using stuff over and over. Here are four ways you can reuse things around your home.

Be a paper saver

Instead of throwing good “slightly used” writing paper away, keep it for notes. Start with a small, cardboard box as a holder. Put the box in a convenient, accessible location. This can be near the telephone, kitchen, desk or homework station. Place all used paper in this box, marking an “X” on the used side, with the blank side facing up. Whenever someone needs paper, you have it handy.

Start a ‘save-it’ drawer

Perhaps you already have a “junk” or “miscellaneous” drawer. Start by cleaning this drawer, discarding objects that are broken. If you can’t find a drawer to use, try storing things in a cardboard box, like a shoebox, or a reusable plastic container.

What goes in a save-it drawer? Just about anything you want to save. A few things to include are: envelopes, paper clips, twist ties, safety pins, rubber bands, buttons, string, thumbtacks (pushpins), tape, etc.

Reuse plastic containers

A few reusable plastic containers (ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) are perfect for storing small items like crayons, buttons, paper clips or safety pins. They are also great for leftovers or as snack containers on the go.

Before using, completely wash containers with soap and water. Label each container (using a masking tape and permanent marker) and store them in easy and accessible areas.

Make a ‘craft box’

Similar to the save-it drawer, a craft box is the perfect solution for those loose markers, paper, glue, paint, crayons, yarn, etc. You can keep scrap fabrics, thread spools, pie tins, clean popsicle sticks, toilet paper rolls, clean drinking straws, mismatched socks, corks, etc. (CoCo)
