The Nov. 12th anniversary of the birth of Baha’u’llah, prophet-founder of the Baha’i Faith, was celebrated in Guam and on Saipan Tuesday evening, Nov. 11, in Baha’i homes or at Baha’i centers.

Baha’u’llah, (Ba-Ha-oo-La) whose given name was Mirza Husayn-Ali, was born into Persian nobility in Tehran in 1817. He turned his attentions to the needy rather than accepting a position as the Shah’s minister and became known as the Father of the Poor. His followers are known as Baha’is.

Baha’u’llah’s teachings center on the oneness of God, the oneness of religion and the oneness of humankind. Baha’u’llah taught that to achieve world unity and peace, man must abandon his prejudices and learn to see himself as a world citizen. And that to achieve peace requires a change of human nature—there must be transformation of the moral values and instincts of man.

There are about 300 Baha’is in the Marianas Islands and close to six million worldwide. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Baha’i Faith is the most widespread religion in the world after Christianity and one of the fastest growing. The World Center of the religion was established in Haifa, Israel, when Baha’u’llah was exiled to the area known then as Palestine.
