Daniel keeps clean record in Genesis Cup
Daniel reasserted its mastery over Jeremiah, notching a 90-78 win in their second meeting in the 2008 CIM-FCC Inter-Color Basketball League-3rd Genesis Cup Friday night at the CIM-FCC Basketball Court in Gualo Rai.
Daniel and Jeremiah collided for the first time late last month with the former cruising to a 94-77 victory. The same teams dueled in last season’s finals with Jeremiah stunning the then pennant champion Daniel, 105-84.
A different Jeremiah crew is playing this season and has yet to show the form that brought the team to the championship. The defending champion dropped two of its last three games and has only one win after Friday’s game.
In contrast, Daniel is still clean after four matches.
Daniel began taking control of the game midway in the first half with Elmer Esdrelon, Alex Lauron, and Brendo Talania trading baskets.
Esdrelon and Talania finished with 10 points apiece in the first half, while Lauron chipped in nine, as Daniel posted a 37-29 halftime lead.
No Jeremiah player scored in double figures in the first half with Wowie Abuel making only eight.
Abuel tried to bring his team back into the game in the second half, as he exploded for 23 points. But he had only Amor Casabuena helping him adding 14 markers.
The trio of Esdrelon, Talania, and Lauron continued to work wonders for Daniel and they drew support from their teammates to beat Jeremiah anew.
The trio combined for 30 of Daniel’s 53 points in the second half. Sam Fernandez contributed eight, George Barbo had six, and Ricky Dela Paz and Rey Culala tallied five and four markers, respectively.
Abuel led all scorers with his 31 points.
