Floyd R. Masga, an avid coin and currency collector, was recently featured in Krause Publication’s November issue of Numismatic News 1st. Annual State of the Industry Special Report, a weekly publication magazine in the U.S. that has been a source for current market prices for coin and paper money collectors since 1952.

When asked why Masga collects coins, he said, “First and foremost, I enjoy collecting coins for their historical significance and value. Imagine holding a circulated coin that’s over 100 years old. The question comes to mind, who has held this coin and where was this coin a hundred years ago? Wow!”

Esther Rasa Babauta, Masga’s mother, was also an avid coin and currency collector. “She was an accountant for a department store on Saipan and tried to buy all the silver U.S. coins that came into the stores,” Masga said. “When I turned 15 years old, she gave me her entire coin and currency collection!”

Masga said he was the only one among his siblings who was interested in collecting coins. As a young collector, he was careful not to use his collection to buy gum or soda. “After that, I could not stop collecting coins,” said Masga.

Numismatic news provides weekly reports on market trends and news concerning collectible Gold, Silver, Platinum, U.S. coins and paper money. Masga is currently a Social Studies instructor at the Saipan Southern High School. (PR)
