Government transparency by Internet
Two of the future-oriented CNMI legislators, Tina Sablan and Joseph N. Camacho, originated an innovative means of guaranteeing government transparency via the Internet. It is a step into the 21st century. All teachers of civics should peruse this website frequently and elicit responses from your students. If your students have internet capability give them assignments from this site. For you newspaper readers, I’ll re-announce this website www.camachocnmi.com. At this site, you can view the current legislation under consideration by our esteemed congress people and you can comment on it! No longer can you say “I didn’t know what they were doing.” What they’re doing is in plain English on this website. If you don’t visit here periodically, you have no one to blame, but yourself. Reminds me of an old folk song titled This land is your land, this land is my land. Use this website also for information to help you decide for whom you will cast your ballot next November. You can see which lawmaker is doing productive work and which are not. That’s www.camachocnmi.com.
The big news is this. I just discovered that President-elect Barack H. Obama is taking the United States of America into the 21st century in a similar manner. A website entitled http://change.gov has been established on the web. This site is to inform and ask for comments on major policy questions facing the American people. I only briefly browsed it on Sunday morning, so am not quite sure exactly how it works. Obviously, it’s brand new. The website also reveals our President’s plans for the country. It’s interesting reading. Could this website be used to address issues between the CNMI and the U.S.? Could it be a means to decrease the very expensive junkets to the U.S.? Why not?
My main reason for bringing this to the attention of the folks here in the CNMI is to encourage our educators, especially those teaching social studies subjects, to get your students involved in the day-to-day operation of government, both ours and the national government. President-elect Obama says he intends to move our schools into the 21st century now. Let’s beat him to the punch. Check out http://change.gov.
