Saipan has long been associated with theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. The famous female pilot’s attempted flight around the world and the Howland Island destination she failed to reach is depicted on a map of which Saipan figures prominently in many, as yet, unproven theories concerning her fate.

This unusual cartographic presentation combines the flight history, geography, cartography and navigation in presenting various intriguing events leading up to her disappearance in the vicinity of Howland Island and her failed attempt to complete a flight around the world in 1937. The cartography includes inset maps of the western Pacific and the former Japanese Mandated Islands of Saipan, Truk Lagoon, Jaluit Atoll and Howland Island. It includes a polar projection explaining time zones and describes the method of calculating time Greenwich Mean Time and compass directions.

Map text explains the “announced” and possible “alternate” flight path which, if taken, could have involved an act of aerial espionage.

Details of the flight and pertinent messages received aboard the U.S. Coast Guard vessel Itasca on station to assist her approach to Howland Island are provided along with sketches. This is a very different, detailed chart and technical presentation of events of interest to aviation history buffs, admirers of Earhart and those interested in examining the intricacies of navigation, all shown visually on a single sheet.
