Lady Ayuyus take JV crown
Kagman High School capped its domination of Southern High School in the girls junior varsity division of the 2008-2009 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Basketball League with a 65-36 win in their title game Wednesday night at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Ayuyus swept the Rays in the three round-robin regular season, as the two teams were forced to meet three times this year after MHS failed to get enough players for its team a few days before the start of the league.
In their fourth and final duel, all the Rays could do was move within five points at the start of the third quarter. But midway in that canto, the Ayuyus started pulling away and never looked back to win the first girls junior varsity crown in the MISO caging.
After Southern cut the lead to five, 21-26, the Ayuyus shut out the Rays for more than five minutes. While Southern was having troubles with its offense, Kagman drew enough points from Nikita Hofschneider, Stacy Mizutani, Sandra Flores, and Becky Mettao to widen the gap at 14, 39-25, entering the final canto.
The Rays were held to only two field goals in the third period and made them in the closing minutes of that quarter.
Southern picked up the scoring a bit in the fourth making 11 markers. But still, the Lady Ayuyus outscored them, 16-11, with Patsylyn Jerby firing seven of her 15 points in the payoff period.
Kagman, which was coached by Francis San Nicolas, had three players finishing in double figures in the title game. Hofschneider also had 15 points, while Mizutani contributed 12.
Daylinne Joseph was the lone double figure scorer for the Rays, tallying 21 markers.
Southern was limited to four points in the first period, which ended with Kagman ahead by 12, 16-4. The Rays never recovered from thereon for a 0-4 record against the Ayuyus.
Today, Kagman’s hopes to make it 2-for-2 this season when it collides with Southern in the boys junior varsity finals.
The Rays are this year’s defending champion having beaten the Ayuyus in last season’s title match, 115-102.
