Muna: Collecting past CUC fees imperative
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s executive director reiterated his need to collect all customers’ current and past payments.
Antonio Muña said it’s imperative for all CUC customers to make payments in order for the utility company to pay its vendors—Mobil, Telesource, Aggreko, PMIC and Shell.
A recent report by Georgetown Consulting showed CUC’s account receivables for fiscal year 2007 were $31.2 million, $9.6 million of which came from government agencies, although it does not specify what agencies.
Muña said he is not going to let the number increase while he is executive director.
“That’s not going to happen on my watch,” he said.
Muña said the government is current on all its payments except for the Public School System, which owes more than $1 million. There is some dispute on how much money PSS owes and, Muña said, they are working to reconcile the numbers.
Gov. Benigno Fitial instructed Muña to “aggressively” pursue all past due accounts owed to CUC.
Board of Education chair Lucy Blanco-Maratita said the BOE has instructed Education Commissioner Rita Sablan to use the remaining $200,000 in the budget to cover the costs.
Muña said that amount is a good start but it will not cover all the fees.
“We need to sit down and say ‘this is a start.’ Twenty thousand dollars is good if that’s how much they owe,” he said.
