NMI’s Bangladeshi community celebrates ‘Victory Day’ today
The Bangladesh Cultural Group will be celebrating the 37th anniversary of its country’s “Victory Day” today, Dec. 16, from 6pm to 11pm, at the Garapan Central Park.
Rakibul “Mintu” Islam of the Bangladesh Cultural Group said that tonight’s event will feature a program celebrating the Bengali culture.
“We’d like to invite everybody, not just the Bangladeshi community but everyone in the Commonwealth, to come to our celebration,” said Islam.
The cultural events will include dinner and will feature performances such as dances, songs, and others.
According to a wikipedia entry, “Victory Day” or “Bijoy Diwas” is celebrated on Dec. 16 in Bangladesh. On that day in 1971, the 93,000 officers and men of the Pakistan Army surrendered to the Indo-Bangladeshi High Command in Dhaka. Pakistani General AAK Niazi surrendered officially to the Allied forces commander General Jagjit Singh Aurora.
Bangladesh gained independence after nine months of a long and bloody struggle.
Islam said the original core group of what later became the Bangladesh Cultural Group first got together in 1994 and its members have been celebrating this event every year. (Saipan Tribune)
