Bud Cup caging opens tonight
The 2008-2009 BANMI-Budweiser Cup Men’s Islandwide Basketball League will kick off tonight with a double-header at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Opening the hostilities in the annual caging, that will feature some of the best players on the island, are Docomo Pacific Hoopaholics and Ol’Aces I. The first game of the night will be played at 7pm.
The Docomo Pacific-sponsored Hoopaholics are composed of players from last year’s champion Rock Steady and will be coached by CNMI Men’s Nationals mentor Rufino Aguon.
Rock Steady took the 2007 Bud Cup championship after eclipsing the Saipan Stevedore Suns in the finals, 92-78.
The 2007 champion was composed of scoring champion Fred Pelisamen, Mark Wallace, Jun Estolas, James Lee, Sivas Awes, Kelvin Fitial, brothers Joe and James Villacrucis, and Mel Manibusan.
In the second game on opening night, Ol’Aces II will square off with JCN Enterprise at 8:30pm.
Both Ol’Aces I and II will be handled by veteran coach Elias Rangamar, while Marvin Deocares will call the shots for JCN.
Rangamar said that after tonight’s games the Bud Cup will resume on Jan. 12. Matches will be played every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Teams interested to join the league are still welcome and must submit their rosters and the $500 entrance fee on or before Jan. 9.
Meanwhile, Rangamar said the opening of the Masters league has been moved to next month to give teams more time to prepare
So far, only two teams each for the 35-and-above and 45-and-above have shown an interest in competing in the Masters caging.
If organizers will not get enough teams, they are planning to run a 3-on-3 league on weekends instead of the Masters caging.
