Visitor numbers across the three islands—Saipan, Tinian, and Rota—decreased last month, according to the latest figures from the Marianas Visitors Authority.

Arrivals to Saipan went down slightly, with 50 less tourists visiting the Commonwealth’s capital in November 2008—down 30,967 from 31,017 in the same period in 2008, which translates to a .0016 percent decrease.

Tourists from the Philippines accounted for the highest percentage decrease at 30 percent (117 from 168), followed by China and Hong Kong at 28 percent (2,040 from 2,821), Others at 25 percent (230 from 308), and Korea at 23 percent (8,909 from 8,909).

The top performer in the Saipan market, meanwhile, was Japan with a 30-percent spike in visitor arrivals to 17,055 in November 2008, compared to 13,087 in November 2007.

While Saipan had a negligible decrease in arrivals, the same cannot be said of Tinian and Rota, which experienced a 32-percent and 30-percent fall in tourism numbers, respectively, in November 2008.

Tinian saw arrivals decrease to 2,598 last month compared to the 3,822 it welcomed in November 2007.

Drop in visitors from the U.S. (92 percent), China and Hong Kong (44 percent), Guam (42 percent), and Korea (27 percent) more than negated the 15 percent increase in arrivals from Japan last month.

Rota, meanwhile, saw its tourist number dwindle to 723 last month compared to 1,030 during the same period last year.

This comes even as arrivals from Japan jumped an amazing 149 percent (484 from 195), as a decrease in tourists from the U.S. (45 percent), Others (25 percent), and the Philippines (4 percent) continued to plague the southernmost part of the CNMI.
