Act like a guest

Malou Berueco writes that respect is gained, not asked, in reference to Northern Marianas natives. It is morally unacceptable, she says, and then attacks the natives.

When you come to someone’s homeland and leave your own by choice, you are automatically saying, “I am leaving what I have here and hope to make a better life in the new place. I accept the conditions of this new life.” If you can’t make this statement, then obviously you better keep looking for another place to live in if you want to leave your homeland.

Remember, you left wherever your homeland was because it was bad enough to want to leave! The respect of the homeland you enter is gained the moment you decide to come here. There seems to be a let’s-attack-the-NM-natives bandwagon and you have jumped on it without a basic understanding of the preconditions of entering the CNMI. If someone forced you to come here, then that is a different matter, but you are a guest. Start acting like one.
