As expected, youth netter Benjie Decena dominated the 2008 Tinian Tennis Tournament by winning both the men’s 4.0 singles and men’s 4.0 doubles championships this past weekend at the Tinian Youth Center in San Jose.

The CNMI North Pacific Team mainstay first beat his father Sonny in the finals of the men’s singles, 6-3, 6-4, then teamed up with him to take home the men’s doubles title against the pair of Rolly Bugarin and Archie Montecillo.

Benjie’s mom also got some hardware of her own, as Linda Decena captured the 4.0 women’s single championship after beating Ellen Uy, 9-7, in the finals.

Jonathan San Nicolas, meanwhile, finished the tournament without a loss and capped it off by defeating James Clemente, 6-1, 6-2, in the men’s 3.0 singles finals.

He then teamed up with James San Nicolas to capture the men’s 3.0 doubles championship against the tandem of James Clemente and Manny Sencio.

Jake Castro also did some heavy lifting in the men’s 2.0 single finals, as he beat Merwin Ramos, 8-5, to annex the championship.

Ramos, however, got sweet revenge when he partnered with Jason Atalig to win the 2.0 men’s double finals against Castro and Jun de Gamo, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.

Jimmy Casauran, for his part, is the champion of the men’s beginners singles after he outlasted Rene Galvez in the finals

But Casauran wasn’t as fortunate in the beginners doubles title match as he and Ramon Santiago succumbed to Galvez and Alvin Reyes and settled for the runner-up plumb.

In the 2.0 women’s single, Jennifer Uy took the championship trophy after defeating Leah Cunanan with the score of 8-5.

In the women’s 4.0 doubles, Emily Kwon and Ellen Uy defeated the team of Linda Decena and Emy Bugarin, 6-4,6-4, to win the tiara.

In the 4.0 mixed doubles, Linda Decena teamed up with James Clemente to outplay Emily Kwon and Manny Gabor, 6-3, 6-2, en route to the championship.

Organizer Tinian Tennis Association would like to once again thank the 12th Tinian Municipal Council, Mayor’s Office, Tinian Youth Center, PTI, Island Garden, and Tinian Ice & Water for their support of the 2008 Tinian Tennis Tournament.
