Three more teams are keen on joining the 2008-2009 BANMI-Budweiser Cup Men’s Islandwide Basketball League, which starts tonight at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

League coordinator and Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands president Elias Rangamar said the CNMI Junior Nationals, MIGS, and Boy Garcia’s team have shown an interest in competing in the Bud Cup.

So far, the league has four teams in Docomo Pacific Hoopaholics, Ol’Aces I and II, and JCN.

Rangamar said they are giving interested squads until Jan. 9 to complete the league’s requirements, which include the $500 entrance fee.

“It will be great if we can have one more team. An eight-team field is an excellent number,” Rangamar said.

Bud Cup will have an early Christmas presentation for basketball enthusiasts, as it will open the league tonight with a double-header.

The Hoopaholics, who will be coached by John Sablan will play in the first game against the Ol’Aces I of Rangamar. Game time is at 7pm. In the second game at 8:30pm, the Ol’Aces II will duel JCN of coach Marvin Deocares.

Deocares is expected to field in the Bud Cup the core of his C&R/NRG team, which placed fourth in the inaugural PILCOWA-San Miguel caging.

Garcia’s squad and MIGS are likely to do the same thing, after finishing first and second in the San Miguel league, respectively.

After tonight’s matches, the Bud Cup will take a holiday break and resume on Jan. 12. Games will be played every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
