Michael Walters, a journalist representing WISH magazine of Australia, spent time on Saipan last week in a one-day, whirlwind tour designed to familiarize him with some of the island’s unique attractions. Walters is writing an article that will reflect his impressions of several Micronesian isles.

Through WISH magazine, it is anticipated that Australians will have the opportunity to learn about the World War II historical sites and nature lookouts of the Marpi area, Sugar King Park dedicated to the bustling sugarcane industry of the Japanese era in the Marianas, plus the Northern Mariana Islands’ Museum of History and Culture. Also visited were the main tourist district of downtown Garapan and other points of interest. Walters also had an opportunity to visit Saipan World Resort’s beachfront water park and the Palms Resort Saipan.

WISH magazine circulates 141,000 copies weekly to a readership of about 532,000 through The Australian, Australia’s leading national newspaper.

Due to a day of high seas, Walters’ exploration of the Saipan lagoon aboard the submarine Deep Star and his scheduled SCUBA dive of the acclaimed Grotto were cancelled, limiting his admiration of the diving hotspot to the roiling water above.

“Mr. Walters’ visit coincides nicely with our joint campaign of ‘Magnificent Micronesia’ with other Micronesia islands he is visiting,” said Perry Tenorio, managing director of the Marianas Visitors Authority. “We are pleased that he will take our message of hospitality back to his readers; we have had a moderate number of tourists from Australia and hope more will choose to visit.”

At the conclusion of his visit, Walters said he hopes to come back with more time on his hands to visit the other Northern Mariana Islands of Tinian and Rota and see more of Saipan.

Walters’ visit on Dec. 8, 2008, was supported with air travel provided by Cape Air, hotel accommodations provided by Palms Resort Saipan, and lunch hosted by 360 Revolving Restaurant, as well as arrangements for a submarine tour by Pacific Subsea Co. and diving assistance by dive instructor Harry Blalock.
