Calvary Christian students win 2 VFW essay contests
Two students from the Calvary Christian Academy topped the annual youth essay writing competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Saipan Post 3457.
Zelena Palijo from Calvary Christian Academy won first place in the Voice of Democracy category. This competition is an oral essay open to students in grades 9-12.
The other winners in this category are Jermaine Peres, also from Calvary Christian, who got second place, while Nacita Aldan from Marianas High School got third place.
In the Patriot’s Pen category, this year’s top winner is Karen Alamer of Calvery Christian Academy. This category is a written essay open to students in grades 6-8.
The other winners are Ian Rogolifoi from Mount Carmel, second place; and Daphne Dela Cruz from Hopwood Junior High, third place.
All winning students will receive a certificate of achievement and a cash award to be presented at the VFW headquarters on Beach Road. The ceremony will take place on Monday, Dec. 22, at 5:30pm. All students and their parents or guardians are urged to attend.
Additionally, each year the VFW recognizes teachers from all grade levels who promote civic responsibility and patriotism in the classroom. This year’s winner is John H. Davis Jr. from Marianas High School.
