McDonald’s rewards NMI teacher of the year
Recognizing the importance of education to the growth of the community, the management of McDonald’s Saipan has given CNMI’s 2009 Teacher of the Tear Jim Phillips with a $500 cash reward.
McDonald’s manager/owner Joe Ayuyu personally turned over the money to Phillips yesterday, explaining that it has been the company’s commitment to give the award to the year’s best teacher.
“We’ve been doing this for a long time,” Ayuyu said.
Ayuyu was one of the panelists in the selection committee for the teacher of the year awardees in 2009.
Being a teacher of the year in the CNMI, Ayuyu said, Phillips would be an ambassador for all teachers in the CNMI.
“This is something that we should be all proud of because he is a local teacher and he has done a tremendous job,” Ayuyu said.
He encouraged all businesses to support education because the islands’ students are investments for the future.
Phillips, who has been teaching natural sciences, particularly Astronomy and Physics, at the Marianas High School for the past five years, was named teacher of the year in the CNMI during Education Day on Nov. 26.
He is one of the 56 candidates from the different states for the national teacher of the year.
The national interview is set in March while President-elect Barack Obama will be announcing the final four; the teacher of the year will be known sometime in April or May.
“Every teacher has the chance to succeed. It is an honor to be chosen among the many hardworking teachers we have here. This is very significant to me,” Phillips said.
Ayuyu said he is confident that Phillips would be chosen.
