5 teams advance to Holiday Hoops finals
The championship pairings in two divisions in the 2008 Annual Christmas Basketball Jam Festival were completed yesterday, while defending champion G-Stars earned a return trip to the finals.
The G-Stars, who won over the Sonics in the 2007 edition of the annual caging, 62-60, advanced to the finals of the boys’ 18-and-under division after walloping Rollers B, 106-73, in the playoffs yesterday at Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Also claiming finals tickets were the Lady Knights and Lady Ayuyus in the girls’ 18-and-under division and the Lil’Sonics and the San Antonio Sixers in the boys’ 14-and-under age group.
The G-Stars were seeded first in the playoff with their 3-0 record in the pool play and were paired with the last-seeded Rollers B with the winner of the match automatically gaining finals entry.
Rollers A and the San Antonio Sixers were also unbeaten in pool play with identical 3-0 slates and were seeded second and third, respectively.
Rollers A won its first playoff match topping the Ol’Aces, 102-95, while the fourth-seeded Sonics stunned the Sixers, 121-112.
The Sonics and Rollers A were dueling for the second finals seat yesterday and will face the G-Stars today at 1p.m. for the championship trophy.
In the girls’ 18-and-under division, the Lady Knights and Lady Ayuyus set their title showdown after prevailing over MHS I, 64-55, and MHS II, 80-77, respectively.
The girls’ 18-and-under finals will be played at 11:30am.
In the boys’ 14-and-under division, Sixers I pounded sister team Sixers II, 110-54, to secure the first finals seat.
The Sixers I will battle the boys’ 14-and-under crown against the Lil’ Sonics, who edged Rollers A in the other semis match, 88-75.
The boys’ 14-and-under finals game between the Lil’Sonics and the Sixers I is set for 10am today.
