Max Camacho made an impressive debut in the 2008 Annual Christmas Basketball Jam Festival after leading the Lil’ Sonics to a title win in the boys’ 14-and-under division and claiming the most valuable player award.

Camacho, who played for the Grace Christian Academy varsity team last season and is among the new recruits of Sonics coach Jesse Tudela this year, scored 20 points in their finals game against the Sixers 1.

The Lil’ Sonics won the match via a come-from-behind 83-78 victory with Camacho making crucial contributions to the team’s rally in the last nine minutes of the game.

Camacho nailed only eight points in the first half and seemed headed to finish the game on the bench when he sustained a minor injury in the last three minutes of the match.

But after only a few plays, Tudela called Camacho from the bench and the latter responded with six points in the stretch to help the Lil’ Sonics steal the win.

Camacho, along with Angelo Salas and John Darag led the Lil’ Sonics to a 3-0 record in the pool play and an 88-75 semis win over Rollers A.

Also winning MVP honors in other divisions were the G-Stars’ Jericho Cruz (boys 18-and-under) and the Lady Knights’ Roxanne Duenas (girls’ 18-and-under).

Cruz scored 33 points in the G-Stars 86-77 title win over Rollers A, while Duenas fired 24 markers in the Lady Knights’ finals triumph over the Lady Ayuyus, 61-56.

Besides honoring the MVP awardees, organizers of the tournament also cited the Top 5 individual performers in each division.

The list include Victoria Reyes, Stephanie Camacho, Mikky Vargas, Azuko Halstead, and Lailani Rabauliman in the girls’ 14-and-under; Camacho, Darag, Jack Aranda, Jed Villanueva, and Raymond Villagomez (boys’ 14-and-under); Duenas, Noelle Calvo, Nicole Lebria, Mercedes Mesa, and Lalaine Pagarao (girls’ 18-and-under); and Manny Matagolai, Joseph Ada, Don Teregeyo, Trevor Ogumoro, and Michael Eclevia (boys’ 18-and-under).

MVPs received trophies, while the Top 5 took home medals.
