A maintenance worker was injured when one of two masked men attacked him with an object during a robbery at a store in San Vicente on New Year’s Day.

Department of Public Safety Commissioner Santiago Tudela confirmed on Friday to Saipan Tribune that the armed robbery indeed occurred. Tudela, however, said investigators were still completing the report at that time.

The maintenance worker, described as a male Chinese, was injured on the chest.

The two suspects, believed to be citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, ran away after getting close to $3,000 from C.Y.C. San Vicente Store, the store owner told Saipan Tribune during an interview yesterday.

Preliminary investigation showed that two masked men, both armed with knives, entered C.Y.C. San Vicente Store along Isa Drive on Thursday at 11:30pm and pointed the weapons at a female cashier.

The suspects asked the cashier to hand over the money. The maintenance worker, who was in the warehouse of the store at the time, heard the cashier shouting.

As soon as the maintenance worker exited the warehouse to check on the cashier, one of the suspects suddenly hit him with an object on his chest.

The maintenance worker collapsed. After getting money from the cashier, the suspects ran across the highway. The suspects fled toward Nativo Drive that leads to Laolao Bay.

The store owner, who asked not to be identified, said the robbery was completed less than five minutes.

The owner said four years ago the same store was also burglarized, but until now no one has been arrested.

C.Y.C. has other branches in Koblerville and in Kagman.

Last Dec. 8, an unidentified man robbed a woman who was walking along a secondary road in Afetnas.

The victim, a 27-year-old Chinese, lost her plastic bag containing clothes, a cellphone, and a wallet.

A week before the Afetnas robbery, a masked man reportedly robbed a 78-year-old man who was sitting outside of his residence in Chalan Kanoa.
