Murder suspect, another juvenile detainee, escape from detention, but later return
Two juvenile detainees, including one of the three suspects in the murder of a security guard at the Marianas High School, reportedly escaped from their detention cells at the Kagman Juvenile Detention Facility on New Year’s Day, but returned later to the facility.
Department of Public Safety Commissioner Santiago Tudela confirmed to Saipan Tribune that Edward Blas and another male juvenile escaped from the Juvenile Detention Facility on Thursday midnight.
Tudela said initial report showed that Blas and the other juvenile went back to the detention facility the following morning apparently because they were hungry and thirsty.
The commissioner said he had no information how the two managed to escape from the facility.
Tudela said the Juvenile Detention is not under the jurisdiction of DPS.
Blas is only 16 years old, but the Attorney General’s Office charged him as an adult in connection with the murder of Efren Ballesteros.
Blas and two other teenagers—Eric Rabauliman and Randy Igisomare—are being charged over the killing and robbing Ballesteros during a burglary at MHS in Susupe last Nov. 17 or 18. The three pleaded not guilty.
